Ever since Covid-19 started I had been looking for fun projects to undertake in my spare time and I found self-hosting. Basically its hosting all of your services on your own servers (or old computer retrofitted for this task). And I have been asked multiple times why do I self host?

  1. You have full control over your services

The primary reason that myself, and many others, opt for a self-hosted services, is the level of control and ownership you have over everything you create. From being able to install plugins and customize your theme, the possibilities are endless when it comes to this.

2. You have full transparency.

With the right monitoring protocols, you can keep a much closer eye on your traffic. This can be daunting if you’re running a small operation, but you should be able to get a better grip on this.

3. You get experience in just setting things up.

In my experience learning to self-host was easy and that me a lot of things that continue helping such as SSL encryption or port forwarding that helped in preparing a website to showcase my mid term project.

4. Lack of support.

If Gmail decides to go down suddenly you have no idea what's going on, in a self-hosted service you can DIY maintenance and for most of them there is a pretty active community support, just search them on Redditt.

5. It’s just fun and you get to brag!

Consider bragging to your friends I have a personal Netflix that i made my self!
